Everyone nowadays is so busy! It can be hard to make good choices when it comes to food. Most of the time people either getting something on the go or ordering take-out.
This fast-paced lifestyle that people have been living is taking its toll on the environment. Fast food containers, excess packaging, and food waste are running rampant in our country.
Many have been stepping up and deciding they want to change their ways to benefit the planet. Are you ready to begin your journey towards cutting your food waste and bettering the environment?
Here are a few tips and tricks to cutting down your food waste:
- You’ll want to start by cutting down on the amount of fast food you buy. Everyone knows the effects fast food has on their health and wallet. It is not good for your body or your funds! On top of that, fast food waste is toxic to our planet. In fact, fast food chains throw away thousands of pounds of food a day! Instead of getting in line at the drive-thru, pack your own lunch for work the night before. If you find yourself struggling to find time to make dinner, consider meal-prep. Put together meals days before you’ll have them and either freeze them or store them in the fridge! Find yourself getting fast food on a busier day? Make sure every bit of the packaging makes it into the proper recycling bin!
- Try always take leftovers home or save them. If you are someone who absolutely loves dining out, make sure you always pack up your leftovers. Think you won’t eat them? Well, save them for your family or consider adding the leftovers to your compost heap at home (if it’s compostable material). Another way to cut back on food waste while your out is to inform the waitstaff of anything you’d like to not have on your plate. For example, if you won’t eat the tomatoes on your burger ask them to leave them off. While you’re at it, make sure anything from the restaurant that can be tossed into recycling bins makes it into one!
- Donate, donate, donate! Did you purchase something you and your family don’t like to eat by accident? Do you have too much of something in your pantry and you need to make room? Do not throw it away! Donate it to your local food pantry and help your community out! Anything that cannot be donated should be appropriately recycled.
Remember that it is essential to be proactive when it comes to issues like food waste. Let’s keep the planet, and ourselves, happy and healthy for many more years!
