When it comes to sustainability at the office, though, the Dutch company Kantoor Karavan might be onto the next big thing.

A Cubicle In The Forest

Kantoor Karavan’s name translates to “office caravan,” which is precisely what the company is creating. These mobile work spaces have all the necessities of the office like a coffee maker, Internet access, and a toilet, but they also have 360 degree windows that can be left open to let in the fresh air. Sporting solar panels for power, and made in an ecologically friendly way, when the work day is done users can get out and enjoy nature.

Balancing Work and Stress

The goal of these caravans, and why they’re being embraced all over the Netherlands, is to reach a balance with work and leisure. Instead of keeping workers locked up in an office all day, these caravans allow employees to work remotely, while enjoying the benefits of nature. When the work day is done they can cycle, hike, camp, or do anything else that lets them let go of the day’s stress.

These caravans are set up in national parks, and workers reach them on foot or by bicycle. That’s the sort of commute lots of people say they’d like, but which very few people get the opportunity for. While this unique method of eco-friendly office work has caught the attention of companies like Google, it’s currently uncertain whether or not it will catch on big, or remain unique to companies in Holland.
