With Mother’s Day approaching fast, (May 10), it’s time to start thinking about getting that perfect gift to show your appreciation for that special mother in your life. Fortunately, we have some quick, zero waste gift ideas that not only show love for that special mom, but for Mother Earth.
Mason Jar Chandelier
Have too many mason jars around the home, and don’t need them on-hand for storage or canning projects? Consider making a mason jar chandelier! It’s a perfect lighting fixture for the mother who loves flair in her interior decorating, or a mom looking for a creative way to light an outdoor patio or porch. One caveat: this project is almost zero-waste, depending on whether or not you have the extra lightbulbs or extra wiring around your home. However, it is still a lovely idea for putting glass jars to use before putting them in recycling.
Jewelry Organizers
If your mother loves jewelry, she would probably equally love a stylish organizer to display and see her collection. By upcycling an elaborate picture or mirror frame, or even artistically putting together branches from the backyard clean-up, you can create a lovely organizer that is unique to your mother’s jewelry pieces. Other designs also use old corks from wine bottles, giving you another way to save small scraps of waste around the house.
Braided T-Shirt Rug
If you have many old t-shirts (or other fabrics, like old sheets) and excellent braiding and sewing skills, this ambitious project can be a unique, useful gift your mom. You can make it in any size, and your mother will appreciate the extra rug that brightens up her room, or keeps her feet from touching cool floors during the winter.
With your chosen project, pair a handcrafted card made from recycled paper, magazine pages, and other creative finds in your recycling bin. There are many more do-it-yourself projects that make a great gift for your mom, and each one demonstrates your love. For more zero waste gift ideas, read the rest of our blog!
